Joker Trailer Hits…And Yeah, It Looks Great

I remember in the years before the DC Extended Universe was a thing, Warner Bros. was very much a studio that prided itself on its director-focused approach to things. Of course, like any studio, it needed to make a profit, but they really seemed to take pride in being a haven for creativity. That’s what made things all the more ironic when they hacked and slashed the likes of Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. And yet, in the midst of all that, there was a glimmer of hope.

Joker was announced as a standalone project. This film is set to take place outside of the DC Extended Universe, and would take place in its own continuity. Like the films of old, it would allow storytellers to come in, tell their tales, and then go on their merry ways, hopefully having made a film worth being revered by film lovers and comic lovers alike. Now, we are seeing the fruits of Warner Bros.’ labor…and man, does it look pretty.

We’ve been told from the beginning that this will be a story of a man’s slow descent into chaos, and it looks exactly like that from this trailer. However, what the pitch doesn’t really get across is the sort of naive and innocent personality the lead Arthur Fleck seems to have early on. Naive, innocent, yet still not quite all there.

I find myself torn. As a character study, it’s undeniably intriguing and gorgeous, but I do worry that the transformation he’ll take from a somewhat harmless man to the complete psycho will further stigmatize mental illness, as the reality is mental illness isn’t the violent boogeyman the film industry often makes it out to be. The movie still looks amazing to me, but it’s hard not to worry about its portrayal of mental illness. Keep in mind, that’s coming from the perspective of someone who is hyper-aware of the subject matter, so I get that I’ll be the minority on this one.
