Joker: Venice Film Festival Director Thinks Film Will Be In Running For Oscars

Ever since it was first announced, Joker is a film us movie geeks have been looking at with another eye toward the Oscars. As Heath Ledger proved over a decade ago, this was a character that was well-suited to even the snobbiest of snobs in Hollywood, and with Joaquin Phoenix now taking on the role in a film centered wholly around him, it seemed possible it could be in the running for at least one other award.

But Phoenix isn’t the only one with a potential to garner a prize. Based on the final trailer and the reception at the Venice Film Festival, there is a lot more to this story than just a single man. In regards to this positive response, the festival director, Alberto Barbera said:

“I think they made a good choice. The right choice. The film deserves the reception it is getting. It goes beyond the boundaries of the genre. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is outstanding and Todd Phillips did a great job.”

But there’s a big difference between “great job” and Oscar contender. What are the actual prospects?

“They’re very good,” Barbera told Deadline. “Absolutely, it will be in the running.”

Of course, the Oscars aren’t exactly a hivemind of people. You never know what they’ll ultimately lean toward, but over the years, they’ve certain skewed toward specific types of movies, and with Joker’s inward look at its lead character, its nods to older classics, and its tour de force performance, it could be the type of thing that finally allows the comic book movie genre to explode as a real awards contender.
