By now, you’ve probably read our report from yesterday that Alec Baldwin has joined the ever-expanding cast of Todd Phillips’ Joker film. In it, he will be playing the role of Thomas Wayne, the father of Batman and founder of Wayne Enterprises. While this certainly seems like a pretty solid get for the film, it turns out Baldwin wasn’t the first choice.
This extra bit of insight comes courtesy of Collider‘s Jeff Sneider, who followed up the news surrounding Baldwin with a tweet, revealing that Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen was given first crack at it:
“BREAKING: Alec Baldwin to play Thomas Wayne in the JOKER movie. This is the role that Viggo Mortensen passed on. I’m told that Wayne Manor will be a location in the film. The plot thickens…”

So there you go. This is all very interesting, as I think Mortensen does feel like a much less conventional contender for that role. Makes me kinda wish he HAD said yes to it. Regardless, Baldwin isn’t a bad choice, especially since the story we’re getting looks to be pretty unique in style and tone.
Apart from that reveal, we also got the reveal that Wayne Manor will be a location in the film. Perhaps Thomas Wayne will be doing some deals with Joker before he goes bad? Does that mean we’ll be seeing a young Bruce Wayne? I certainly hope not.
