In The Walking Dead, Jon Bernthal burst into the scene as Rick’s best friend turned rival Shane Walsh in the fight for survival against the walkers and untrustworthy humans. By the finale of season 2, Shane met his demise at the hands of his best buddy in an emotional conflict. Aside from appearing as a figment of Rick’s imagination in Season 3, Shane has disappeared from this zombie-filled world… until now.
Bernthal, who is currently portraying Frank Castle on the Netflix series Marvel’s The Punisher, will be reprising his role as Shane amongst the Survivors. Bernthal was spotted on set along with castmates Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus by a fan, who later posted it on their Instagram account.
Bernthal’s Shane will most likely appear in either a flashback before his death or as another hallucination amongst one of the Survivors. News of Bernthal’s return comes shortly after the (unconfirmed) rumors that season 9 will be Lincoln’s last with the popular AMC series. Moreover, with the possible departure of Lincoln, AMC may be looking to compensate Reedus by giving him a pay boost in his next contract with the show.
Time will tell whether the rumors circulating Lincoln’s exit of the series are true, but fans can definitely count on the return of Bernthal’s Shane Walsh when the series returns in October.
