Jordan Peele, Issa Rae Team For Sinkhole, A New Genre Film For Universal

Jordan Peele will be working as a producer with Insecure creator Issa Rae on a unique project called Sinkhole. THR is reporting that this new genre flick will be made for Universal, Peele’s home studio, which released both Get Out and Us. And, in true Jordan Peele style, it looks to be off-kilter in nature. The film will be based on the short story “Sinkhole,” which was written by Leyna Krow and published in the literary journal Moss. Krow will serve as executive producer.

“Sinkhole” is a story about a young family who moves into their dream home. As one would expect, they are more than a little surprised to find a sinkhole in their backyard. But the sinkhole has an amazing ability — the ability to repair broken objects. Of course, the natural question is what this sinkhole would do if a broken person was tossed in.

But that won’t be the only thing that will be questioned in this movie. In the official announcement, the studio states the film will be a “genre piece that engages on the question of female perfection and identity.”

Personally, I haven’t read the short story, so I don’t know if this aspect differs from the original, but it’s ripe for exploration. I can imagine a teenage girl thinking she can’t measure up to a certain level of beauty. Could she be truly considered “broken” by the sinkhole? And if not, what happens to her? If so, how will the sinkhole fix her? What can be considered to be an objective look of beauty?

This very much feels like an episode of The Twilight Zone, so I’m actually surprised they aren’t going that route. That being said, I’m all for interesting and weird original ideas, so keep on bringing them. After all, it’s this kind of stuff that Peele has said in the past he was put on this earth to make — social commentary stories.

There is no word on who will direct. Given Peele’s usual trend of creating his own original stories, I don’t see him taking it on, but if he were to wholly adapt the script himself, he’d be a great fit.
