I remember when I saw that first trailer for Get Out, I was conflicted. On one hand, the movie looked pretty solid, but on the other, it was from Jordan Peele, so I wasn’t quite sure if it was actually supposed to be scary or if I was supposed to be taking it seriously. The answer was, of course, a resounding yes. I was supposed to take it seriously, and I was foolish for not believing in it in the first place.

When that film hit theaters, it became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Jordan Peele as the master of social horror. Not only would he bring the scares, but he’d bring a little something extra to the table as well. And now? That’s his brand. But would he be able to match that high level of quality with his second film, Us? I certainly had my doubts, as a sophomore slump is notoriously difficult to overcome, but if the initial Rotten Tomatoes score is any indication, he’s at least had his way with critics.

As you can see, based on 39 reviews (based on a screening at this weekend’s SXSW), he is sitting pretty at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ultimately, that’s a pretty great start for the movie, and while it still has a long way to go to catch up with Get Out (which had 341 positive reviews and six negative ones), it’s well on its way.
