Horror directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo never shied away from a challenge. In searching for their next horror film, they landed on a claustrophobic underwater scary film with The Deep House.
The found footage film used plenty of practical effects, including underwater sequences without CGI, underwater acting, and actual real sets immersed underwater.
The film stars James Jagger (Vinyl, The Outpost) and Camille Rowe (Cosmic Dawn, Knuckledust) as two underwater YouTubers searching for their next viral video in a house submerged at a bottom of a lake.
Here is the full synopsis of The Deep House:
Deep below the surface of a seemingly tranquil remote lake lies a perfectly preserved family home. When a young influencer couple sets out to explore the submerged house to capture uncharted content for their social media followers, their dive turns into a nightmare as they discover a sinister presence. With limited oxygen supply and time running against them, the couple must find a way out to escape the underwater house of horrors before it’s too late.
LRM Online’s Gig Patta talked with directors and writers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo on the movie magic in creating this horror film from building a set to be submerged in an enormous water tank to underwater stunts with acting to even the cinematography in narrow passages for claustrophobic effects.
Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are a French directing duo, who arrived into the horror genre with its 2007’s film Inside about a strange woman wanting a woman’s unborn baby. They continued with two more French horror genre films with Livid and Among the Living. In 2014, they entered into the American horror genre with their segment titled X is for Xylophone as part of the ABCs of Death 2 anthology. A few years later, they directed Leatherface, another film based on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre lore. Last year, they directed a demonic terror film Kandisha.
The Deep House is on EPIX and available for digital purchase via Paramount Home Entertainment today.
