Justice League Cinematographer Cried His Way Through The Whedon Cut

Is there a single film out there with as much convoluted back and forth as Justice League? It was supposed to be the film to rally the masses to DC’s side after the tepid critical response to Batman V. Superman. But instead, it splintered opinions and served to be the final nail in the coffin for both Ben Affleck’s role as Batman and his role as director in his own Batman standalone film. There have been boycotts, protests, and petitions to get the fabled Zack Snyder cut of Justice League released.

Fans may recall that the famed director of 300 left the production in the wake of a personal family tragedy. Ironically DC recruited Joss Whedon, best known for directing the smash hit Marvel’s The Avengers to see Justice League to completion. Well, lighting doesn’t always strike twice in the same place. So, as you know the Snyder/Whedon Frankenstein results have ignited a fury among cast and fanboys.

Now to further add to all the hoopla, Justice League cinematographer Fabian Wagner detailed his reaction to watching the final theatrical cut of Justice League. It’s worth mentioning that Wagner completed cinematography under Snyder before Whedon boarded the project. Wagner was asked by Comic Book Debate about whether he had seen the theatrical release of Justice League. His answer was pretty straight up and forward:

“I have, unfortunately.”

Wagner was further pressed to explain how much of the final cut had changed from Snyder’s original vision to what fans saw in theaters. Wagner had a tough time answering that one because according to him:

“It’s really hard to say because I was watching it and I think I was crying all the way through.

“So it’s hard for me to say exactly how much was changed, but a lot was changed. It looked very different, and it’s sad for me because I loved working with Zack. I had the best time of my life.”

Wagner further added:

“It was a shame to see the film the way it turned out to be”

Ouch! Maybe one day we will get that mythological Snyder cut of Justice League, but will it be before there’s an entire new Justice League lineup set to hit theaters? Thankfully DC has had success post Justice League with Shazam and Aquaman. The closest we may ever get to a final cut is Kevin Smith’s Justice League: Into The Snyderverse episode of Fatman Beyond. Apparently, we really missed the goods.
