I really like Martin Scorsese as a director, the guy is a genius to me, but I simply do not understand where he was coming from with his controversial comments lately that the superhero genre is “not cinema“. You can catch the original story in the related section below, but the quote remains the same.
I don’t think anyone would have had any issues with Scorsese saying he hates those types of movies, or just doesn’t like them, that’s subjective, but to say they are not cinema, feels like he is categorizing them as somehow less worthy than the films he enjoys and that’s not a very nice things to say about fellow writers and directors. The latest MCU star to disagree with Scorsese is Karen Gillan who plays Nebula in many Marvel movies.
Gillan spoke with THR at the 10th anniversary Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic Los Angeles. She said,
“I would absolutely say that Marvel movies are cinema, cinema is story-telling with visuals. There’s so much heart and soul, and it’s James’ soul in there, he injects so much of his own personality, his sense of humor … that’s a very big representation of who he is as a person and therefore it’s very cinematic. He’s an artist.”
Gunn had already commented that he was “saddened” by Scorsese’s comments. Maybe it’s just a case of Scorsese getting old enough now that he has stopped caring what anyone else thinks of him, you know, like your grandparents, but I find his comments to be quite unprofessional and unnecessary. The veteran director could have simply chosen to say he didn’t like those kinds of films and that would be absolutely fine.
This will probably blow over eventually, but right now it seems to be growing instead of subsiding as more and more comments from those in the industry come out.
