Karen Gillan Says Jumanji Is Basically An Original Film That Pays Homage To The Original

Hollywood sometimes gets hammered for their apparent lack of originality. Often times a studio feels safer rebooting or making a sequel to a popular film than taking a chance on a new idea. Sequels often fail to live up to the original film, and reboots can go either way.

According to early reactions and reviews, the latest rehashing by Hollywood, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle appears to be a success. One of the stars of the film, Karen Gillian, spoke with IndieWire and praised the film for both being original and at the same time paying homage to the Robin Williams version:

“That was the thing that made me want the role. Because I just think we’re inundated with reboots and remakes all the time, we need some original content, please! To then read the script and realize it is original content, while still paying homage to the original, I was like, ‘This is perfect.'”

While it won’t be easy to fill the shoes of Robin Williams, the film is receiving mostly positive reviews. I loved the original film as a kid, the magic, and adventure, as dangerous as it could be, me and my friends really wanted to play Jumanji.

While I am yet to see the new film, the trailers and feedback certainly have me feeling good about it. Along with Gillian the film stars, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is in theaters now.
