In a recent chat with Empire Magazine Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirms that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie still has no third act. However, Kennedy herself is unperturbed by this and admits that Waititi is slow and they need to give him to time to finish.
“Taika is working away. He’s just, and he won’t get mad at me for saying this, slow. We’ve got a couple of acts, we need a third.”
Slow is not terrible if like Kennedy said elsewhere in the piece, the focus is on getting these movies right and not hitting some plucked out the air release date. We’ve already covered Kennedy’s quotes on that from previews of this Empire coverage. Check the related section below.
So, Taika has two thirds of a script for a Star Wars movie. Surely he can get his finger out and finish it? I mean, it’s not like Waititi is currently juggling several projects at once. Okay, it is like that and I’m being sarcastic. For me, it takes as long as it takes.
Kennedy also gave an update on various other projects but nothing we have not heard before. Lando and Rogue Squadron are still alive says Kennedy, despite it seemingly quite the opposite.
“Lando is still on the books, and Rogue Squadron is still on the books. We just want them to be great”
As for the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy movie staring Rey, Kennedy gave the same response as she has previously.
” The First Order has fallen, the Jedi are in chaos — there’s even a question of how many exist anymore — and Rey’s building the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her”
As said, we’ve heard all that before in previous interviews, so nothing new there for us.

That’s a lot of projects to juggle by Kennedy, let’s hope the no rushing approach will pay dividends? As for Taika, as said above I’d rather give him time, however that may depend on whether you are a fan of his work or not? For now the main task is coming up with a suitable third act that fits with the rest of the movie. He could have it ready today, or in 3 months’ time. So we may have to wait for that process to complete before Lucasfilm can even think about dating the movie.
What do you think as Kathleen Kennedy confirms that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie still has no third act? Thoughts below as always.
