Kathleen Kennedy Says Next Star Wars Film Will Release When They Are Ready

In a recent chat with Empire, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says the next Star Wars films will release when they are ready. Kennedy announced three new Star Wars films at this years Celebration, but no release dates or any kind of timeline. These three should also be added to the movie still in development from Taika Waititi, again with no kind of date.

This is unusual practice, especially at Disney who likes to have dates locked years in advance. However Kennedy says it’s the right call, and that Star Wars movies shouldn’t be every year, but released only when they are ready.

“I’ve often brought up Bond, that’s every three or four years and there wasn’t this pressure to feel like you had to have a movie every year. I feel that was very important to Star Wars. We have to eventise this.” The simple answer is, nothing is likely to hit the multiplexes until at least 2025. “It’s much better to tell the truth,” she says, “that we’re going to make these movies when they’re ready to be made, and release them when they’re ready to be released.”

The question remain which movie will hit theaters first? For a long time most in this industry have predicted the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy movie which acts as a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker would film first. Although, only this week, Deadline reported they heard Taika Waititi was hoping to film his Star Wars movie next year. Therefore that Rey sequel prediction may be inaccurate, especially if the script is being significantly retooled by Stephen Knight. From what we’ve heard, a lot will need to change.

Given that we currently get between one and three Star Wars TV shows a year, I’m not sure we need to have that many movies. Saying all that, we haven’t had a single movie go under cameras since the warp on The Rise of Skywalker. That’s a long time ago now. The other thing is that it’s not like Lucasfilm hasn’t been trying. There are several movies which were announced that will never see the light of day. Fans can only hope this is not the just the latest batch of ideas that don’t produce anything.

So, Kathleen Kennedy, aka Krazy Kath says the next Star Wars films will release when they are ready. I certainly don’t want to see any more rush jobs that take a big dump on the franchise, we had enough of that with the sequels. What do you think of Kennedy’s comments? Let us know below as always.
