Lucasfilm really needs to go beyond Star Wars. I know to at least one other contributor here at LRM Online, they’ve been ignoring Indiana Jones for far too long, but I personally think they need to get beyond those two franchises. With all the talent working for the company, you know they can do much more than just carry on the legacy of a galaxy far, far away in perpetuity.
But what other types of stories can they tell? Making an entirely new franchise from scratch ain’t easy, so it would make sense if they wanted to base it on something already established…and as it turns out, they already have one such story: The Children of Blood and Bone, a young adult fantasy book that was acquired by Fox.
As soon as Fox was acquired by Disney, Kathleen Kennedy asked Fox exec, Emma Watts, if Lucasfilm could co-develop the movie, as she saw themes in the story that “echoed those of Star Wars”. As of right now, we don’t know the status of all that, but it’s clear that Kennedy is interested in growing the legacy of Lucasfilm and trying to create a definition beyond just Star Wars.
“I’m very excited at the possibility of being able to do things that expand our portfolio a little bit,” she said. “You realize there’s so much potential to do some pretty great things, and to expand beyond just ‘Star Wars’ is pretty exciting to think about.”
I couldn’t agree more. With Star Wars going on a brief break following The Rise of Skywalker, I hope they use that time to figure out other ways to forge an identity. In addition to that story, the outlet has confirmed that Solo‘s Jonathan Kasdan has written a pilot script for a Willow TV series. This past May, we reported on that possibility, and it looks like this is a further evolution of that
