Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter Talk Bill And Ted 3, Along With The Writers Of The Original Films

Party on dudes! It looks like the long-gestating Bill and Ted 3 is getting closer to being put into production. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the core of the franchise, stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, along with the writers of the first two films, Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson describe the journey of getting a third film made.

Keanu Reeves:

“Chris and Ed came to us in 2007 with the idea of doing it. They pitched us an idea. It sounded great. Simple, right? In show business. There’s show and then there’s business.”

Ed Solomon:

“We’ve been to the altar a few times. We get rejected right about the ‘now you may kiss the bride’ part of it.  We wanted to get it right. We wanted to have it be something that we — all four of us, Chris and I, Alex and Keanu — could stand behind, and know we’re doing this for the right reasons.”

The script that Solomon and Matheson developed is titled Bill and Ted Face The Music. Matheson speaks about where the gnarly duo is now:

“You’re told you’re gonna save the world. And now you’re 50 and you haven’t done it. Now they’re married, and it affects their marriages, and it affects their relationships with their kids, and it affects their everything.”

Keanu Reeves:

“Everybody’s a little older now, a little afraid. Indomitable spirits confronted with, ‘Is this the end?’ Of course, there is a little caveat in that someone comes from the future and says: ‘Not only do you have to save the world, you have to save everything.'”

Alex Winter:

“There’s certain comparisons. A rock band that never goes to the place it thought it was going to get to. Having that moment in their life of going: ‘Do we try to get there, or give up the dream?'”

Winter also mentions that they went out and found a director:

“We went out and found a director, Dean Parisot, who we love, did Galaxy Quest, which is a masterpiece.”

Solomon then adds perhaps the best description of the feel and direction of the film and says they’re close to a deal that would finance the film:

“I think it’s kind of like A Christmas Carol with Bill and Ted. Looking at their lives, and really kind of rediscovering what they’re about. We are hoping to close a deal with some financiers. Hopefully within the next month or so, we’ll have news that will stick.”

Also noteworthy is that Steven Soderbergh is a producer on the film.

I was the right age to enjoy the first film when it was released, in the words of Bill and Ted, an “excellent” movie that is in no way totally bogus, their adventure was a lot of fun. The second film was far more out there and was really only saved by their interactions with the grim reaper. Having said that, I am more than ready to watch this third installment into the franchise and see Keanu Reeves return to, in my opinion, not necessarily one of his best, but one of his more memorable roles.
