Obi-Wan Kenobi begins broken and faithless says Ewan McGregor of his character in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Series on Disney+. I actually find McGregor’s comments interesting as I stupidly expected to see an almost zen-like Obi-Wan in his transition to the Alec Guinness version. And yet it makes perfect sense, because if your main character doesn’t grow, or have an arc in a show like this, then what is the point?
Speaking to EW in the video below, McGregor says,
“So we find Obi-Wan at the beginning of our story, rather broken and faithless, and, eh…beaten, somewhat given up.”
McGregor then goes on to explain the reason Obi-Wan is like this is because of everything that happened in Revenge of the Sith. The Jedi all killed or in hiding, Order 66, and for him personally his failure to prevent Anakin’s turn.
Hopefully Obi-Wan learns that there is hope throughout the course of this series and that leads him towards the more clam and positive version we see in A New Hope. After all, by the time you dispense with all the Force powers and Lightsaber battles, the story has to actually have an effect on the characters.

Although not directly, and open to your own point of view, ahem, I feel like McGregor may have also give us a small conformation of something we have been saying for a long time. That there will be flashbacks in Obi-Wan Kenobi to moments between Kenobi and Skywalker. You don’t bring back Hayden Christensen just to have a few scenes of him with the mask off? Hayden doesn’t even play Vader in suit for the majority of the movie as far as the rumors and reports go.
Talking about how weird it was that it seemed like time hadn’t passed between Episode 3 and now,
“Were on this set, I look over at him [Christensen], and he’s Anakin, and I’m Obi-Wan now, and it’s like nothing had happened.”
McGregor never shared a scene on film with Darth Vader in suit. Therefore I very much doubt McGregor is talking about that when he says,
“I didn’t see any age on his face”
I mean, come on, of course there are flashbacks. However this is the first time there’s been any mention of that from any official source, so I felt it worth mentioning.
What do you think of Ewan McGregor’s comments about how Kenobi begins broken and faithless in Obi-Wan Kenobi? Thoughts below as always.
