Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra proves he’s bad at his job in a recent interview by saying Madame Web was a good movie. LA Times spoke to the Sony CEO about his time at the helm of the studio since 2017.
Talk turned to the oft-maligned Sony’s Spider-Man Universe which has been an utter failure in both concept and execution. However, Vinciquerra thinks they are good movies which were wrongly maligned by the press.
“Let’s just touch on “Madame Web” for a moment. “Madame Web” underperformed in the theaters because the press just crucified it. It was not a bad film, and it did great on Netflix. For some reason, the press decided that they didn’t want us making these films out of “Kraven” and “Madame Web,” and the critics just destroyed them. They also did it with “Venom,” but the audience loved “Venom” and made “Venom” a massive hit. These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason.”
What utter tosh Tony.
The Rebuttal
First, the actual idea to take Spider-Man villains, give them their own budget movies, and not have Spider-Man was awful. As fans have said time and again, no one asked for this. However, just because no one asks for something does not mean a good movie can’t be made. Sadly, that is not what happened with the SSMU.
Venom was a success despite critics because for some reason China went mad for it. That’s the reason, plus it was the first one, so fans are curious. Each subsequent Spider-Man based movie did worse at the box office because audiences knew what to expect. Not to mention Sony’s not so subtle attempts at gaslighting general audiences into thinking these are MCU movies. A fact, which If I’m honest probably hurt the actual casual audience for MCU movies forever.

Tony, you mention how Madame Web found success on Netflix. Let me tell you why. People put Netflix on in the background like old TV channels. Hence why they’ve reportedly told their writers to write dialogue you can track whilst not watching. Additionally, by the time the movie hit Netflix, which was very quick after theatres, it had already become a meme. The few people who did see it, legally or otherwise were tearing it apart online. People won’t pay good money to go see this trash in theatres. However, they will bang it on Netflix in the background whilst they play on their phones.
I recall my wife and daughter finding it and watching it. They knew nothing of any negative reputation and I said nothing. I asked her later what she thought and they had turned it off half way through as it was awful.
Sorry Tony. Your studio is a joke in the industry, and the name Sony Pictures is synonymous with cheap, bad movies. You’ve proved once and for all that whoever hired you to be CEO of Sony Pictures is equally as clueless as you are. Do the world a favor and just sell the IP back to Disney. That’s the best profit you can make for your pay masters, because your taste in movies and knowledge of what audiences want is way off.
