Kevin Feige Reacts To Black Panther’s Historic Best Picture Nomination

It may feel like your average ordinary Tuesday, but it’s NOT your average ordinary Tuesday. Today is the day the Oscars have announced their nominations for their upcoming awards ceremony, and the big film making headlines on fan sites around the world is the fact that Black Panther has not only locked down seven nominations, but that it’s also taken a nomination for Best Picture.

With this nomination, the billion-dollar grosser managed to snag yet another record as the first superhero movie ever nominated for Best Picture. If you’re on the younger side, yes that means even 2008’s The Dark Knight was completely shafted when it wasn’t nominated. In fact, it was this shafting that led them to allow up to 10 Best Picture nominations — though they have only really since used it to pad the category with countless boring, generic indies (can you tell I’m bitter?).

You can imagine the swell of pride that everyone over at Marvel Studios is feeling right now. Sure, they may have tens of billions of dollars to show for their hard work, but it’s not easy to get approval from the Oscar snobs in the industry, and now they have that too. Speaking with EW, producer and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige reacted to this announcement:

“The word that keep coming to me from the moment it happened is just this humbling sense of pride for everyone involved in the movie. It’s the most important recognition that a film can receive in our industry. That’s not lost on any of us. It’s something that’s immensely gratifying.”

“As the numerous phone calls and text messages [show] that went back and forth between all of us who were lucky enough to work on the film, it is just … pride.”

Feige then continued to discuss the film itself:

“I think Blank Panther is a unique movie told by a unique filmmaker in a unique time. It comes down to this amazing cast and crew, and a brilliant director who had something to say. He had a very personal story and struggle to explore, and he wanted to use this movie and this canvas to tell it. Looking over the past year at the cultural impact this movie has had around the world, it feels like the recognition from the Academy this morning is the pinnacle of that.”

Of course, I’m sure there are some of you (I can hear you typing) who think this only made it this far because of the history it made for its diverse talent. And you know what, you’re not entirely wrong:

“The message of Black Panther, and not just the message within the thematics of the film, but even the story of how the film was made, how it came together, and how it was received. It’s about representation, and it’s about inclusion, and it’s about the importance of telling different types of stories. That the Academy recognized that this morning is extremely gratifying to all of us.”
