Kickstarter Spotlight: Like Father Like Daughter

Like Father Like Daughter returns to Kickstarter for issue #7

By just about any metric you want to use, this has been the biggest year for Kickstarter ever in terms of creators self-publishing comics. We have seen big names like Scott Snyder & Tony Daniel and publishers, such as Top Cow and Boom Studios all have very successful campaigns. However, we certainly don’t want to overlook that many smaller creators who have also successfully funded their projects on the platform just as they have been doing for many years.

One such project is Like Father, Like Daughter. This superhero comic is currently in the midst of successfully funding it’s seventh issue and is working towards stretch goals at the time of this writing. We spoke with series creator and writer Kat Calamia about her experience funding successfully through Kickstarter for previous issue of the property, we also touched on the higher profile creators and publishers turning to crowdsourced funding as a means of producing their projects. Finally we discussed the project itself and how themes of family, belonging and responsibility inform this classic superhero story she is telling. The podcast will be out this Wednesday, November 25th. In the meantime, check out a few of the things Kat had to say below and click on the link below to go check out the campaign.

Did you originally approach the property with an idea of exploring the theme of family?

“I don’t think I came up with the concept saying ‘I’m going to put a family in it because I need something to be relatable’. I think luckily it just kinda happened. I agree though I think the family aspect is what’s most relatable and I’ll say the idea of family, that word is going to change throughout the book”.

Do you worry that higher profile creators and publishers are taking attention away from smaller creators on Kickstarter?

“I think they help those creators in a lot of ways because this year was the biggest year for Kickstarter and it was because of the Scott Snyder’s, because of Book Studios that brought more eyes to Kickstarter”.

Having run several successful Kickstarters if you could only give one piece of advice to someone using the platform for the first time, what would it be?

“Really use the social element of Kickstarter is my biggest advice and support other people’s Kickstarters”
