Sony’s Kraven the Hunter is moving ahead and yesterday it was announced who will star as the lead character Kraven. It’s going be Aaron Taylor-Johnson! It seems Sony were after the likes of Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt at 0one point, but have instead opted to cast someone who I’m guessing not a single fan would have picked for the role. Not only will Taylor-Johnson appear in his own solo movie but the actor has been tapped for several appearances in the VenomVerse. Or is it the MCU? I still don’t fully know.
J.C. Chandor is directing Kraven the Hunter for Sony.
Born into Russian aristocracy, Sergei Kravinoff a.k.a. Kraven the Hunter is an obsessive big-game hunter. However, after meeting a Voodoo witch doctor named Calypso, Kravinoff took a herbal potion which enhanced his physical powers. The potion also extended his life keeping his health and vitality for years to come. In mots adaptations I have seen of the Kraven story, the character begins as an antagonist. Usually he is in New York to hunt down this menacing Spider-Man. However, being that Spidey is a hero, in many adaptations Parker ends up aiding Kraven and allowing him to move away from an antagonist role.

As is customary with Spider-Man characters, they really need Spider-Man to make them work. Now we are in a situation with Sony where Venom, Morbius, and now Kraven will all appear without Spider-Man as their catalyst, or perceived enemy. Ultimately this is what I just don’t get with Sony’s current strategy at all. As for Aaron Taylor-Johnson, he’s a good actor, I really liked him in Kick-Ass, though less so as Quicksilver/Pietro in the MCU. However in terms of fan casting Taylor-Johnson would be extremely low on my list for Kraven. When I imagine the character of Kraven I’m thinking more of Karl Urban in his Billy Butcher get up. Taylor-Johnson just doesn’t come across that way to me.
Then again, given the way Sony are making these movies without Spider-Man, I really don’t care for this VenomVerse anyway. This latest casting decision just reeks of the latest in a long line of bad choices made by Sony. Seriously, if you are a shareholder of Sony Pictures, you should just sell your IP’s and take some quick cash. Whoever is running things over at Sony is tuned to the moon.
