Kumail Nanjiani Says Eternals Will Be The Most Sci-Fi Of All Marvel Movies

I guess the most prominent news I see everywhere regarding Eternals, is how damn buff Kumail Nanjiani has gotten for the movie (see above). As a geek/nerdy bloke, I personally don’t see what the fuss is about. Hey ho, it’s a free world, and when EW caught up with the actor recently, and asked him about Eternals, there was a lot of time spent on that spanking new bod.

Luckily for me, things did finally move on towards the movie itself. Nanjiani tries to explain what kind of movie we should be expecting and does a decent job of selling the movie. I have to say, what he says continues my intrigue with this upcoming MCU spectacle.

“It’s really, really an epic. And it’s really such a science-fiction story. It’s a superhero story, but in some ways, it’s the most sci-fi of all the Marvel movies and it’s the most epic of all the Marvel movies. And the story spans thousands of years. So it’s really not like any of the other Marvel movies.”

It also seems like this kind of approach is exactly what Nanjiani is looking for.

“I love superhero movies, but beyond that, this is exactly the type of movie that I love. If someone would say, ‘All right, what kind of movie do you want to watch? What are the things that’s going to have?’ I would say all these things. And that’s what this movie is. It really spans thousands and thousands of years. And the story is just so big and so epic. And I don’t mean epic in the internet way, I mean epic in the old-school way…It doesn’t look like any of the other Marvel movies. I was on set shooting, and the director showed me just a still of all of us together in the scene. And I was like, ‘I mean, look at all of us together.’ We all look so different. It’s me and a huge buff guy from Korea [Ma Dong-seok] and Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie and Gemma Chan and Lauren Ridloff. You don’t ever get to see people like this together in the same room, let alone in awesome superhero costumes.”

However, when we have the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel, and when we consider the galaxy-spanning epic that was Avengers: Infinity War, I have doubts about this being the most sci-fi of all Marvel movies. What does seem to set Eternals apart is the thousands of years in which it will span. Perhaps I could understand if Nanjiani is thinking classical sci-fi. I mean pre-Star Wars era, when science-fiction was always a bit serious and…I want to say academically challenging. Of course, it would be hard to try and squeeze the previous very cosmic movies I mentioned above into that kind of sci-fi. Therefore without seeing the movie, perhaps Nanjiani has hit the nail on the head with his description.

I have no idea what Nanjiani’s character’s (Kingo) abilities are, and I am trying to stay as fresh as possible for this one, because I love being in a place of ignorance for once. It’s rather refreshing when you know so much about these mega geek movies that folks like us grew up with. However, yesterday I did find out that Ikaris, played by Richard Madden can fly. Here is that social media post from yesterday showing Ikaris taking flight if you missed it. Though check the related section below for this plus more Eternals news that hit earlier this week.
