Thanks to the Internet—people can now communicate with anyone worldwide. Long-distance friendships can prosper and connect with the simple click of a button on a screen. With the indie film Language Lessons, the comedy explores a relationship between two people at a distance by speaking the same language.
The film stars Natalie Morales and Mark Duplass. Morales directed the movie from the screenplay written by Duplass and Morales.
Here’s the official synopsis:
When Adam’s (Mark Duplass) husband surprises him with weekly Spanish lessons, he’s unsure about where or how this new element will fit into his already structured life. But when tragedy strikes, his Spanish teacher, Carino (Natalie Morales), becomes a lifeline he didn’t know he needed. Adam develops an unexpected and complicated emotional bond with Carino—but do you really know someone just because you’ve experienced a traumatic moment with them? Bittersweet, honest, and at times darkly funny, Language Lessons is a disarmingly moving exploration of platonic love.

The film has plenty of potential as an indie darling with Mark Duplass (with his brother Jay Duplass), who had developed many heartwarming films about friendship and love with great success. As for Natalie Morales, she has an extensive career in comedy on the television front. After short films and television episodes, she’ll make her directorial feature film debut with Language Lessons. Interestingly, Morales directed a couple of episodes of Room 104, in which the series was created by Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass.
If the trailer is any indicator, then it’ll be a film that you’ll laugh and cry at the same time. I can’t wait to check this film out.
Language Lessons opens in select theaters nationwide on September 10.
