Here’s my review of Lanterns S1E07 and after this, only one more to go, so far I’ve loved Lanterns so what did I think of this one? Let’s point out this is a fresh and therefore spoiler free review of the episode. I will however assume you have at least seen 1-6, or were never going to.

Any Good?

Last week ended with John activating the Hal back up with the emergency power in his ring. This week picks up that story but first we get some flashbacks to Hal’s childhood with his father. The good thing is that once we do get back to 2026, we have the Hal and John dynamic back, but of course it’s a little different.

I think that was always my concern about the 2026 storyline and when Episode 6 ended I knew the writers had thought of this. As I said, the dynamic is different, this is the John of 2026, the one who rejected the Lantern Corps. Whereas Hal is the pre-2016 version who doesn’t know what happened from Episode 4/5 onwards. It’s the same. but different and it’s one of the shows strengths that the dynamic is never allowed to grow stale between the two leads.

The plot is very simple this week, seeing Hal and John go on a small quest/journey into the unknown. However, the bulk of the runtime is taken up by simple back and forth between the leads, using the previous event and Hal’s backstory as context. Mystery remains strong with an episode to go. We are still no closer to working out who killed Hal, and the suspects are piling up. Then the episode closes with a new story development I honestly didn’t see coming.

What seems clear to me is that Hal was definitely still working after his release from prison. Maybe not for the Guardians, but his own moral compass. Exactly what he was doing and how it led to his death remains to be seen.

I’m really looking forward to the finale next week. There remain several avenues for this story to end and several options for where these characters go in the future. I’ve loved every episode of this season so far and Episode 7 is no different.

GRADE: A

A simple episode which could be defined by a road trip and a flashback, but when the focus is on the shows leads, there’s always sparks. It may have taken this episode to iron things out, but it does feel like Hal and John are more of a team with the same goal now than at any point previous in the series. It also feels natural, which is a credit to the witing given how the previous episode had gone. Big set up for the finale next week, I hope the show delivers.
