Lawrence Chen On Creating A Docu-Fiction Based On Real Life Events In ‘Starring Jerry As Himself’ | Exclusive

Starring Jerry As Himself

Starring Jerry As Himself is ready to make its West Coast Premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The film is coming off a very successful Slamdance Film Festival winning three awards. These included the Slamdance Film Festival Grand Jury Documentary Feature, Audience Award Documentary, and Acting Award for star Jerry Hsu.

Starring Jerry As Himself is a docu-fiction hybrid film that blends the lines of reality, leaving audiences guessing as to what is real and what is not. What is fascinating is that this film is that the protagonist of this film Jerry Hsu, is the real-life father of producer, John Hsu, and this film is based on real-life events.

One day Jerry gathered his family which included his ex-wife, and two brothers to tell them that he had been recruited by the Chinese police to be an undercover agent in an international money laundering investigation. The story was so strange that Jon Hsu enlisted the help of his friend and close collaborator Lawrence (Law) Chen to document Jerry’s story. What they discovered was quite the story.

Here is the synopsis for Starring Jerry As Himself

Jerry is the father everyone wants to have as their own, and his journey is one that rivals that of Alice following the white rabbit into another world. Employing various creative filmmaking techniques to capture the world from Jerry’s perspective, the film is a genre-bending meta experience as Jerry deals with a wild tale of international intrigue in which he inexplicably finds himself a lynchpin with his family none the wiser…or has he?
