Supermarket Sweep is back.
The newest rendition of America’s supermarket game has new rules, new challenges, and best of all—a new game show host.
Comedian Leslie Jones was made perfectly to host Supermarket Sweep for ABC. The actress/comedian has an improvisation humor style that fits naturally in this fast-paced game show.
The concept of the game show is simple—there are multiple rounds of quizzes pertaining to food that the three paired teams must answer. The teams accumulate extra time with each correct answer to then challenge each other in a qualifying round to accumulate the most expensive items in their shopping cart. The team with the highest accumulation would then move to the big prize round.
In the big prize round, the team has a clue to gather a specific item in the supermarket in order for it to lead to the next clue item. By gathering all the items, the paired contestants can double or nothing for another clue with a few minutes to gather the mystery item. Or the contestants can walk away with the cash.

Last week, LRM Online’s Gig Patta participated in a virtual roundtable luncheon with game show host and producer Leslie Jones. Also, the executive producers Alycia Rossiter and Lenny Marcus joined the conversation.
“Game show hosting is like being a comedian, especially a comedian that gets to do crowd work. So I took a combination of that with me being a hardcore television watcher. There’s not many game shows that I don’t watch. Not many things that I don’t study,” Gig Patta asked Leslie Jones. “Then at SNL, you get a little taste of what it would actually look like if you was a game show host. But, I think it was natural fun.”
Jones gave credit to higher powers for gifting her a sense of humor.
She continued, “The thing that’s always worked for me is crowd work. [Chuckles] I say the first thing that comes to my head. Usually, it’s from God. Some of the funniest things that I’ve said coming straight from my head has just been classic lines. When you’re real, actually care, and give you a piece of yourself to someone else, you can’t beat that. I don’t know what TV is if it’s not better than this. I was made for this.”
ABC’s Supermarket Sweep kicks off tonight at 8 p.m.
