Limbo Trailer Reflects Refugee Experience in a Remote Scottish Island

Limbo - Amir El-Masry

Indie darling Limbo is a fictional drama of a Syrian refugee waiting in the fictional remote Scottish island.

In this waiting game, the main character Omar patiently takes cultural classes and gets to know his immigrant roommates better. As a talented musician with his prized possession with his grandfather’s oud, he struggles to remain in Scotland away from his family and seeks to once play music again.

Limbo was recently nominated for two BAFTA awards for Best British Film and Best Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. It won film festival awards at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, International Film Festival & Awards Macao, Cairo International Film Festival, and the British Independent Film Awards

Ben Sharrock, the director, and writer spent time working for an NGO in refugee camps in southern Algeria and living in Damascus in 2009 before the Syrian civil war outbreak. During his time in Syria, he formed a network of friends and those personal stories inspired the heartfelt film about the refugee experience in the United Kingdom.

The movie stars Amir El-Masry (The Night Manager) with Vikash Bhai, Ola Orebiyi, Kwabena Anash, Sidse Babett Knudsen, and Kais Nashif (Tel Aviv Nashif).

There’s plenty of good buzzes resulting from the film in the film festival circuit. The characters are all lovable and it opens your eyes towards the perspectives of refugees who lost their homes and seeking a new life. In this story, the British characters seem to unrelate and have a disconnect with the refugees but are trying their best to assimilate the new immigrants into their society.

Plenty of many great scenes that will put a smile on your face.

Focus Features releases Limbo into theaters on April 30.
