As optimistic as things often seem to be going at Disney+, it was only a matter of time before some stuff started to go wrong. The studio of all things nostalgia announced months ago that the Disney Channel original series Lizzie McGuire would be getting a revival series soon, which will follow the character as an adult. In the more recent promo for 2020, we even saw a single shot from the show, which featured Lizzie talking to someone in a car.

But, less than 10 days into the new year, it looks like it’s hit quite the speed bump. Terri Minsky, the original series creator and showrunner on the revival, has stepped away from the project.

“Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series,” a Disney spokesperson said Thursday in a statement. “After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show.”

The show is now on hiatus, and with a showrunner still not named, who knows how long it’ll be until it gets back into production. Personally, I’m wondering where the disconnect between Minsky and Disney was. Did one party want the show to be more mature than the other, or was it simply a story conflict?

All in all, I’m surprised that it took filming two episodes for them to see that disconnect.
