Before you get any farther. No, Robert Downey Jr. didn’t express any desire to come back as Iron Man, nor did he say anything that hinted at any inside knowledge of the character. That being said, his character is one that has struck a chord with audiences for over a decade, and in the wake of his death, many are wanting to see more of him at some point down the line.

Speaking with Extra while promoting Dolittle, Downey was asked whether or not he could see Iron Man returning at some point in the future, even though the character is dead.

“Yeah, anything could happen.” Downey said in a noncommittal fashion. His wife and partner, who he was interviewed with, laughed, knowing right away what the headline would be. “As far as I’m concerned, I hung up my guns and I’m good to let it go. I also think Marvel is on this journey now and they’re trying a bunch of other stuff, and I’m excited for them to see how all that goes. It’s hard to project.”

So, what does that mean? It honestly means nothing. Downey has clearly made peace with moving on from the character and is ready to move on, but seems open to the possibility of coming back in some way, should Marvel want to do so. 

There have been rumors about Downey returning to either in some A.I. capacity as well as voicing Stark in the What If…? animated Disney+ series.
