Lizzie Borden took an ax
And gave her mother forty whacks,
And when she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.
So goes the classic schoolyard song, in the hundred-plus years since the horrific incident which it recounts, there have been numerous adaptations. The latest comes in the form of a new film starring Chloe Sevigny as the titular Lizzie and Kristen Stewart as a housemaid named Bridget Sullivan. Rather than it being a strict adaptation of what little events we know, this one turns it on its head, highlighting the relationship between the two.
Below is the official synopsis for Lizzie:
“Academy Award® nominee Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry, “Big Love”) stars as Lizzie Borden, the notorious woman at the heart of one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. After a lifetime of loneliness, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit in housemaid Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart) and their secret intimacy sparks an unthinkable act. Director Craig William Macneill (The Boy (2015), “Channel Zero: Candle Cove”) explores the days leading up to the savage crimes in a dark tale of repression, exploitation and thwarted dreams.”
On the whole, I think this trailer accomplishes its goal. In many ways, it reminds me very much of Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, which hit theaters last year. Like that film, this one looks to be a slow burn of a film, full of delicate tension, with each scene slowly leading up to the terrifying murder we all came to see.
Will the film manage to live up to the tension this trailer lays out? We’ll have to wait and see.
