Logan: James Mangold Would Be Shocked If X-23’s Character Wasn’t Explored More

Franchises seem to make up Hollywood’s bread and butter these days. So long as there is some sort of branding attached to a group of characters, it’s possible to have almost anyone have their own spinoff film. For better or worse, that’s the age we live in, and when the credits role for a particular film, there always seems to be the possibility that a character’s journey is far from over. While this year’s Logan may be Hugh Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine, that’s not to say it’s the last we’ll see of Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23, played by young actress Dafne Keen.

Given the girl’s young age, and the fact that Wolverine seems to be bowing out for the time being, it isn’t crazy to think 20th Century Fox could let his spirit live on through X-23. There is a trend in the business to cast actors younger so that they can last longer in a franchise, but is that indeed what will happen with this new character? Is she destined to continue on in the X-Men franchise in some capacity?

While on a live Facebook Q&A, Logan director James Mangold addressed the question or whether or not we can expect to see more of X-23.

“Expect is a big word. I think Dafne is a remarkable actress and I think she does an incredible job with this role. Personally, I would be shocked if we don’t look into trying to develop that character further.”

Of course, you can’t take this as the gospel. This is coming from a man at the tail end of a long process, so we can’t necessarily expect him to take action any time soon, despite the fact that he’d already expressed interest in doing so earlier this month, when speaking with We Got This Covered.

“I think Dafne is incredible in the film and I would love to see another film about that character and that’s certainly something I’d be involved in.”

But, we’ll see if that actually comes to fruition. Additionally, it can’t be stressed how difficult it would be to incorporate Laura into a PG-13 world. With the exception of Deadpool and Logan, this has been a PG-13 franchise. Given that she was introduced in a hard R film, it would seems strange then to nerf her abilities with a PG-13 rating just so she can play with the other X-Men.

But the X-Men aren’t the only potential other playmates. We just recently had word that Ryan Reynolds was to begin work on an X-Force movie. Given the R-rated nature of Deadpool, and that Fox seems to be getting a bit more bold with their R-rated superhero films, it’s not outside of the realm of possibility that we can see her in an R-rated X-Force. And if that doesn’t work, who knows? Perhaps we can get an honest-to-goodness X-23 movie. That’d be an interesting one.

What do you think of Mangold’s comments? Do you think X-23 is bound to spinoff at some point? Let us know your thoughts down below!
