Lord Of The Rings: J.A. Bayona To Direct The First Two Episodes Of Amazon Studios’ Series

It’s hard to believe that it has already been almost eighteen years since we first saw Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time on the big screen. The future of the world was in the hands of a Hobbit named Frodo Baggins, played by Elijah Wood, who is tasked with taking the Ring to Mount Doom to destroy it. Following that film were five more films including the three prequels which wrapped up with 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Lucky for us that is not the last we had seen of Middle Earth.

Amazon Studios is producing a series based on the popular J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels that will explore new stories the precede The Fellowship of the Ring. Today via Amazon Studios we have learned that acclaimed filmmaker J.A. Bayona will be directing the first two episodes of the series. He will also serve as an executive producer along with his partner Belen Atienza. Bayona is known for films like The Orphanage, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and The Impossible.

Bayona commented on his admiration for the books as well as his excitement to work on the series. “J.R.R. Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time, and as a lifelong fan it is an honor and a joy to join this amazing team,” said Bayona. “I can’t wait to take audiences around the world back to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never-before-seen story.”

The film is being written by JD Payne and Patrick McKay who also commented on Bayona and Belen being on the project. “We are thrilled to have J.A. and Belén joining the fellowship as we continue to develop this epic series,” said Payne and McKay. “We have been great admirers of J.A.’s work for years, and know that his epic, cinematic and deeply heartfelt aesthetic is the perfect sensibility to bring Middle-earth to life anew.”

“The scope and breadth of J.A.’s world-building is exactly the right fit for our ambitions for The Lord of the Rings. He’s a passionate and collaborative director who has brought new stories to life with his multi-talented producing partner, Belén.” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We are all excited for them to join our writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, and we can’t think of a better way to begin this journey to Middle-earth.”

Amazon Studios’ The Lord of the Rings series was possible by a massive nine-figure rights deal with the Tolkien estate and has a multi-deal commitment. It is being produced by Amazon Studios along with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.

As a huge Jurassic Park fan, I am not sure how I feel about Bayona working on another one of my favorite series. But like anything else I will reserve my comment until after I see the final product, hopefully, he does well.
