Middle-Earth is back. With Amazon reportedly spending a buttload on money on their upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel series, today we get news of a new video game coming out, based on one of the key characters in the series, Gollum. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is expected to have a 2021 release, Daedalic Entertainment announced the game at the Game Developers Conference 2019 last week. The game will focus on the part of Gollum’s life up until the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and will be unconnected to the Amazon series.
Co-founder of Daedalic Entertainment Cartsen Fichtelman explained. “We’ll tell his story until he first shows up in The Fellowship of the Ring,” he said to Venture Beat “Sometimes they mention some things that happen to Gollum, but nobody knows exactly what happened. That’s our task, explaining what exactly happened there.”

The game will see the player have to make decisions as both personalities of the character.
“When you play Gollum, you’ll play Sméagol at the same time. You need to make some decisions, maybe some decisions that are more or less from Sméagol, and some that are from Gollum. You can decide for yourself what you’d like to see more. When you decide some things, it could be—this is reflected in the mechanics. The game forces you to convince yourself and find one of these two positions. When it comes to other iconic characters in the universe, in Middle-earth, we’ll see what happens around Gollum.”
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is expected to be available on all relevant platforms when it’s released.
