Some LOTR: The Hunt for Gollum news as Anya Taylor Joy is confirmed for the film and we also know who she is playing. We shared a rumor recently that Anya Taylor Joy was cast in a large role within new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum.
at the time I was a bit sceptical due to all the other cast members being announced ahead of time. Yet, I did say there could be many reasons, probably contractual why Joy was excluded from that cast list. at the time we also had no idea who she could be playing and we have an answer to that also. Though, if you’re a Tolkien fan it’s not a name you’ll have heard of.
As per Variety,
‘Anya Taylor-Joy is the latest star to join the cast of “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.”
The New Line and Warner Bros. film is directed by and starring Andy Serkis, who returns to play Gollum, alongside Ian McKellen (as Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Lee Pace (King Thranduil).
Taylor‑Joy joins a standout ensemble of new cast members, including Kate Winslet (Marigol), Jamie Dornan (Strider) and Leo Woodall (Halvard). The Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee is set to play the role of Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm, who is described as “a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil.” Warner Bros. will release “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” worldwide on December 17, 2027.’

Okay, so some key information here in this article. One we know ATJ is playing one of Thranduil’s people. Therefore, I expect her to be heavily involved with the imprisonment of Gollum. After being found and ‘dropped off’ by Aragorn and then questioned by Gandalf, Gollum is released from his captivity by the Elves who were guarding him. Initially of course this escape troubles Gandalf greatly, but in hindsight it was absolutley necessary for Eru’s (God in the Tolkien Universe) plan to deal with the One Ring and Sauron.
We also get a name for Winslet’s character of Marigol, which is absolutley a Hobbit/Stoor name. I again speculate that Winslet will play the matriarch of Smeagol’s community and his grandmother, who ultimately banishes him.
I can kind of see how this film might work. I’m guessing the real time plot of the search and capture of Gollum will be split up by glimpses into the past of Smeagol as he became what is now Gollum. You can just imagine the Elvish captors listening to him as we get a flashback of his cruel and horrible life and thus take sympathy on him.
Whether this will work as a narrative in it’s own movie remains to be seen. The story itself really fits in during the opening act of Fellowship of the Ring. Essentially between Gandalf telling Frodo to keep it secret and keep it safe and his return. There were earlier searches for Gollum I believe that proved fruitless prior to Fellowship that could be expanded upon.
Then the next movie, Shadow of the Past is going be set between the Mushroom scene in Fellowship to entering Bree. This is where I begin to have some concerns about the flow of these movies.
What do you think as Anya Taylor Joy is confirmed to play a Woodland Elf in LOTR: The Hunt for Gollum? She does have that Elvish look, I’ll give her that.
