Louise Gonzales and Courtney Casper Kent On The Fun Spark Short Nona [Exclusive Interview]

Nona

This week, Disney+ is gearing up for the debut of another Pixar Spark Short. This one is titled, Nona. This one is near and dear to me as it features a grandmother that all she wants to do is watch her favorite wrestling program. Not just for herself, but also as a memory of what she and her husband used to do together. But fate has other plans for her. Her 5-year-old granddaughter is unexpectedly dropped off. Now it’s a battle of whit to see if she can distract Renee enough to be able to enjoy her wrestling show.

Nona is a beautiful short with so much love. In the short, we are able to see her past, present, and future as well. We revisit the good times she had with her husband and why she is so passionate about wrestling. She enjoys the programming as it is a way to still connect with her loved one that has passed away. But we see that the future is bright when we meet Renee. Who had one point even attempts to jump off the stairs like the wrestlers on television. It’s a very sweet story that to this point is my favorite as part of the Spark Short series.

Here is the synopsis for The Pixar Spark Short Nona

A grandmother, Nona, plans to spend her day off by shutting out the world to watch her favorite TV show, “E.W.W. Smashdown Wrestling.” However, when her 5-year-old granddaughter Renee is unexpectedly dropped off, Nona is caught between her two favorite things. Renee wants to play while the normally-doting Nona wrestles with wanting to watch the Smashdown, leading to a decisive showdown between the two, and a loving compromise.

With the release of Nona, LRM Online’s Emmanuel Gomez talks with Louise Gonzales and Courtney Casper Kent. Gonzales is the writer and director for the short. Kent is the producer on Nona. During our interview, Gonzales tells us about why this story was so important to him and where he got his inspiration. He also shares with us his love for wrestling. Then we also chatted about the attention to detail in the short. It was a fun conversation that you can check out down below!
