But there has been one important character that had yet to be cast, the wizard Shazam, who grants Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel) all of his powers. Thanks to TheWrap, we have reports that This is Us actor Ron Cephas Jones is in talks to play the Wizard. Jones recent roles also include Luke Cage, Mr. Robot, and The Get Down.

The Wizard Shazam first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ Whiz Comics #2 in February of 1940 and was created by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker. He is the one responsible for giving young Billy Batson the powers to transform into a superhero. DC Comics acquired the rights to Captain Marvel in 1972 and has printed his stories under the title Shazam! since 1973.

Shazam! will be directed by David F. Sandberg from a script written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Peter Safran will be producing the film, who is currently working on Aquaman. Production for Shazam! is set to start production next month.

The Wizard Shazam, not to be confused with the protagonist Shazam, which is not to be confused with the genie Shazaam, which is not to be confused with the 90’s blockbuster starring Sinbad Kazaam.
