Dedra Meera actress Denise Gough confirms that Maarva originally said ‘f*** the Empire’ in the Andor finale. In that finale what we saw in the finished article had Maarva give a speech which ended with the words ‘fight the Empire’. However fans have been speculating since the finale about actress Fiona Shaw’s mouth shape and wondering whether the line was originally different. Turn out it was.
Speaking with Empire Online, Gough told the outlet that the finale was actually her first day of shooting. Gough also confirms that line was changed in post.
“My first day was Ferrix,” she said, recalling her arrival on the eight-acre town built at Pinewood Studios – a living, breathing, industrial planet. “I was given my two Death Troopers – one of whom had to be trained to run like a Death Trooper and not like a musical theatre star – and I couldn’t help myself, I just started doing the [hums the Imperial March]. Then, everyone started doing it.” From the very start, a rebellious spirit was in the air. “Fiona’s voice was over all of us,” Gough says, recalling the finale’s fire-and-fury funeral monologue from Ferrix’s formidable matriarch. “Except, at the end, she didn’t say, ‘Fight the Empire!’ She said, ‘F*** the Empire!’ Which we were all really excited about. But we weren’t allowed to keep it, obviously.”
Andor was already pushing the boundaries of a PG-13 show. Additionally we’ve never had that word used in Star Wars. I therefore think it was a wise choice o replace it. Though, to be fair, many fans disagree with me on this one.
Still, it’s good to know some fans can stop making 15 minute videos analyzing the mouth shape of Fiona Shaw. It’s now 100% that what you think might have happened, did happen. The interview (linked above) has Gough discuss bringing the character of Dedra Meera to life in Andor. Go check it out if you are interested in what Gough had to say outside of the quote above.
