Madagasikara documentary shows the darker side of Madagascar.

In the United States, many people relate to the animated film Madagascar as a vibrant, colorful paradise for animals full of clean beaches, lemurs, lizards, and coconuts. Sadly, the real country of Madagascar is far from the truth of the animated film.

From Global Digital Releasing, Madagasikara tells the story of three resilient women fighting for the survival of their families and the education of their children against the overwhelming forces of domestic political instability, international political hypocrisy, and the crushing poverty caused by both.

In 2009, fed up with the increased poverty and widespread corruption, Madagascar’s citizens took to the streets in protest. After the president was forced to resign, the international community terminated most foreign assistance to this chronically impoverished island nation. Over sixty percent of the country’s revenues were immediately wiped out, resulting in the dramatic curtailment of education, health care, sanitation, and access to food.

Today, over ninety percent of the population lives in poverty and under conditions worse than fifty years ago.

LRM Online has an exclusive clip from the documentary that stresses the poverty situation in this island nation. The clip includes an interview from Lisa Bass, director of Seed Madagascar.
