Margot Robbie joins Pirates of the Caribbean.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one that has been in need of a shakeup for a while. Nothing against Johnny Depp, but his shtick as Jack Sparrow — while great — is better in a supporting role. While they tried to bring that back in Dead Men Tell No Tales, there was still just a tad bit too much Jack for my taste. In my mind, you needed someone who could really command the screen as well as Depp and take the story from him when necessary. It seems like Disney agrees.
THR is reporting that Birds of Prey star Margot Robbie has joined a new iteration of Pirates of the Caribbean. And she’s not alone. She’s brought with her Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson to develop and write the project. If this is confusing, let me clarify that this Pirates project is different from the other Pirates project from Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin.
That’s right. Disney is developing two different Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Does this mean we will be getting two Pirates movies? I’m not sure. For all we know, Disney could be developing two projects before watching them fight for supremacy. However, knowing them, they could also be creating two specific different directions and iterations for the franchise — not unlike how they handle the MCU. Then again, it’s not even clear if these films would take place in the same universe.

Sadly, plot details are scarce at this point, but this project will not feature Jack Sparrow. It will be an original story with new characters, and like its predecessor, it’s based on the Disney ride. In my head, I can almost see this as them saying, “ignore the movies, and just go back to the ride. Start from there and create a kickass pirate movie.” Of course, I don’t know if that’s their approach, but it sounds like one that could work.
Of course, Christina Hodson is a hot commodity in Hollywood these days. In addition to Birds of Prey, she wrote Bumblebee and the upcoming Flashpoint film and Batgirl — though we have no idea in what state those last two will be coming out.
Depending on how you feel about the Pirates franchise, you may be excited or exhausted. I’d personally check myself off as excited. I loved Birds of Prey and like the idea of starting from scratch with a whole new take — one that can coexist with the Jack Sparrow stuff. Had this been another attempt to shoehorn Jack Sparrow in, I may be more inclined to be exhausted, but I may be in the minority on that one.
