Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Director On The Pros And Cons Of That Series Vs. The Mandalorian

How working on the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and Mandalorian will be different.

Every project under the sun is different. Even projects that make up the same franchise can be night and day. We need only look to the Star Wars franchise to see that. The work done on projects like the amazing Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the mediocre The Mandalorian look nothing alike. You need only to look at the groundbreaking Stagecraft technology to see that huge difference. But what about from one streaming series to another? How different could they possibly be?

Director Deborah Chow had the privilege of working on The Mandalorian on Disney+, but she’s also the sole director of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. If there’s anyone who would know about the differences between working on the two streaming service, it’s her. Speaking during THR’s TV director roundtable, Chow discussed how Obi-Wan will contrast with The Mandalorian.

“It’s definitely going to be different, just in terms of the sheer workload, obviously, of doing the whole thing.”

That is certainly a big difference. While Jon Favreau “created” and wrote the majority of the Mandalorian episodes, it does seem very much like a team effort. Conversely, the Obi-Wan series seems more creative-focused.

“But in some ways, I’m going to miss having a team, and having people who are there to bounce ideas off of. But then obviously the flip side is, it is nice to have a coherent voice and know what you’re doing from beginning to end.”

It’s definitely a double-edged sword. In any project, there are give and takes with different processes. When working with a group, there’s something to be said about the strength of crowd-sourcing ideas and leaning on each other for support. The downside is that you end up with a series that is made by committee. With a show created by a singular vision, it’s a lot more work on the director, but there’s a lot less support.
