When first real footage of the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game from Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix hit a couple of months back, it was…less than well-received. The Avengers themselves became the subject of scrutiny, and I personally felt like the Cap they had in the game looked like a Cap they’d get if they hired a slightly overweight actor eight months prior to filming a movie with the promising of getting fit…only to find that he never did…so they had to cover him up in a bulky costume.
The rest of the internet had a lot less kind things to say than I did — especially about Black Widow. Regardless, a video game is like a moving train, so move forward things will, and we can only help that with some time and hands-on gameplay, that opinions will change. Now, the video game devs have a brand-new 20-minute video that shows off just that.

Below is the official description for the tutorial level we get to see played through:
“Lightning strikes, repulsor blasts, ground pounds, shield throws, and spy tech make our heroes quite the team in Marvel’s Avengers. In this tutorial level, the Avengers must defend San Francisco after a mysterious attack threatens the safety of the city.”
The footage has an opening cutscene and from there, it transitions into gameplay with a quicktime event, which kicks off with Thor. From there, we see footage of a player playing as each of the main Avengers, with cutscenes making up the transitions between.
Say what you will about the graphics and the polish, but the transition between thew players seems pretty cool, and the flexibility that it allows is kind of unparalleled. If they can balance the gameplay so that it’s fulfilling enough (and not just running through a bunch of quick scenes), I think it could make for a fun Marvel experience.
