Mary Poppins Returns Trailer Brings The Spirit Of Original — Complete With Animated Sequences!

The Mary Poppins Returns trailer has a lot of groundwork to lay for the film. In it, we have to set the stage for our lead characters, reintroduce an icon, and reassure audiences that the magic of the original wasn’t lost along the way. Disney has released said trailer this morning, and while it isn’t practically perfect in every way, as I’d hoped, it does an admirable job.

I’d say its biggest fumblings are in the first part of the trailer. The whole situation regarding the Banks children (now adults), comes across as contrived and incredibly stiff and choppy. However, while a lot of momentum is lost until around the midpoint, they more than make up for it with showing off some of the magic from the film, which will once again involve animated sequences that echo the first movie. Additionally, they introduce more than enough actors to get musical fans just a little bit excited.

Below is the official synopsis for Mary Poppins Returns:

“In Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, an all new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.”
