For years, audiences have been perfectly content to enjoy that first Matrix film and let the other two films just…disappear behind closed doors. That being said, I’ll admit to really enjoying the majority of the second film and liking certain aspects of that final offering, even if it turned into a generic action flick by the end. While these movies were a big part of the era they helped define, many of us have been wary of seeing more stories.

Over the years, there has been talk of sequels and reboots for the franchise, but this latest comes as a bit of a surprise. According to THR, we will be getting yet another Matrix film, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss set to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.

Joining them will be Lana Wachowski, who will be writing, directing, and producing this effort. Also writing this film is Aleksender Hemon and David Mitchell.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” said Toby Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

It’s unclear what the return of Reeves and Moss means. Does it mean the second two films will be released á la Halloween? We’ll have to wait and see. However, one cool thing to think about is that David Mitchell is on board to help write the screenplay. The literary novelist has hit it big in the past with novels of Cloud Atlas, which the Wachowskis adapted for the big screen some years ago. His involvement in the screenplay could indicate a return to the more cerebral for this franchise, which is an interesting thought.

This also has me wondering what Lilly Wachowski will be up to while Lana works on this movie.
