Apple Committed $300 Million To The First Two Seasons Of The Morning Show

Apple is pouring billions into their upcoming Apple+ streaming service, in what seems to be a focus on providing content that rivals current companies. One of those projects is the Jennifer Aniston-Reese Witherspoon series The Morning Show. According to Bloomberg, Apple committed $300 million on the first two seasons of the show.

The series, which also stars Steve Carell, centers on a morning news anchor (Aniston), fresh off outing her co-anchor (Carell) on alleged harassment live on the air, and adapting to her new, truth-telling co-anchor (Witherspoon). The series, written by Kerry Ehrin (Bates Motel, Parenthood) with six episodes directed by Mimi Leder (HBO’s The Leftovers, Deep Impact, ER), also stars Billy Crudup (Spotlight, Watchmen), Nestor Carbonell (Bates Motel, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises), and Mark Duplass (Creep, Blue Jay). Aniston, Witherspoon, Carell, Ehein, and Leder are all executive producing the series. Additionally, CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter was a consultant for the series.

The fact that Apple has put down $300 million for the first two seasons of this series alone shows just how much the company is willing to invest in what it sees as premium content. This figure is only a portion of the alleged $6 billion the company has budgeted in order to offer a deep variety in its library to rival its competition in the upcoming “streaming wars.” With this series residing among a lineup that includes the names Spielberg, Momoa, and Octavia Spencer,  Apple seems to be flexing what it sees as quality muscle.

Whether or not this lineup is able to hang with the current and upcoming streaming services will be revealed later this year, when Apple+ goes live.
