Matt Reeves Signs Big First Look Deal With WB/D For Film And TV

It seems another spin-off series from The Batman was hinted at by The Penguin producer.

After all the shakeups at WB/D there was some concern from fans of The Batman. However as reported by Deadline, Matt Reeves has signed a big first look deal with WB/D for both film and TV. Prior to the DCEU changes Reeves was already working on a sequel to The Batman and pushing ahead with the Penguin HBO Max series. Based on what is reported below, I think we can call this side of the DCEU safe for now, thankfully.

As per Deadline,

Warner Bros is going all in on The Batman director Matt Reeves and his 6th & Idaho production company. He has become the first filmmaker given an overall first look film deal since Warner Bros Pictures Group Co-Chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy were hired by Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav to steer the film division. In addition, Reeves has re-upped with the Warner Bros. Television Group and Chairman Channing Dungey, where he is also working on The Batman spinoff series The Penguin with Colin Farrell.

“Making this legendary studio my home is a dream,” said Reeves in a statement. “I am so excited to be working with Mike, Pam, and Channing and our teams to bring captivating stories I am truly passionate about to the big and small screen.”

Under the terms of the film deal, Warner Bros. Pictures Group’s production divisions – Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, Warner Animation Group and DC-based Films – will have first-look rights to Reeves’ work as a writer, director and/or producer.

For me this is great news. I really enjoyed The Batman and I want to see more form this Bat-focused Universe Reeves is creating. One opinion that’s never changed since I was a kid, Batman works better in his own contained Universe. Specifically I mean away from the other DC heroes and villains. I always felt the same way about the X-Men within Marvel’s Universe. Thus far, I’ve never seen any stories, cartoons or movies which made me change my opinion. I was hopeful therefore that this The Batman universe will be expanded upon under the new WB/D management structure. Given this latest news, it appears that will be the case.

What do you think of the news Matt Reeves has signed a big first look deal with WB/D for both film and TV? Are you excited to see more of The Batman? Or, whatever other projects Reeves develops over the next few years? As always, leave any thoughts you have below, or over on our Discord server.
