Matthew Vaughn Hints At Plans For Man of Steel 2 And Then Sadly Confirms He Is No Longer Involved

When I first heard DC/WB were looking at Matthew Vaughn to develop and direct Man of Steel 2, I was excited. For me, Vaughn made the best X-Men movie in First Class, and would have had a great trilogy which ended with Days of Future Past. Unfortunately, Fox wanted Days of Future Past first and Vaughn didn’t like that idea, the rest is alas history. Kick-Ass remains one of my favorite superhero movies, and whilst the Kingsman movies aren’t really up my street, I appreciate they are still well-made movies.

Superman as a character seems to be on hiatus with DC right now and Henry Cavill doesn’t even appear to know if he will be back in the red and blue again going forward. So the idea of Vaughn making a Man of Steel 2 movie with Cavill had me genuinely hyped. Unfortunately, according to Vaughn himself, he is no longer in talks to direct Man of Steel 2 for WB. In a recent interview with Polygon, the director discussed some of his ideas for the sequel, but admitted these will never likely see the light of day any longer. In fact, Vaughn’s words were more specifically that Man of Steel 2 was “no longer happening“. This is something that I’ve suspected for a while now and if true, then WB really do have their collective heads up their own back passages in this writer’s opinion.

Vaughn mentions how he and Mark Millar pitched a trilogy idea for Superman a way back in 2008. The trilogy’s first movie was supposed to be predominantly set on Krypton instead of Earth and Vaughn says it would have been “a massive, uplifting, hopeful thing.” Vaugh revealed that in his original trilogy pitch Krypton wasn’t destroyed as quickly and that Superman had the chance to grow up between both worlds until its inevitable destruction. Now, of course, this time around Vaughn would have been following on from Man of Steel and thus his ideas would have had to be switched around, but Vaughn had once again pitched his idea for Man of Steel 2 along with Mark Millar again to WB. However, it seems like WB has decided to go in a different direction, one that might not even see a sequel to Man of Steel made.

I have to say whilst I was keen to have Vaughn on board, that initial trilogy idea of Supe’s being raised by his own father somehow on Krypton doesn’t sit that well with me. I personally feel like the parenting Kal-El receives from his father Jonathan Kent, along with the acceptance of his limits at his father’s death are the two main hallmarks of his character. Saying that, I would have judged the film on its own merits, and I still really want to see what Vaughn could pull off with Superman. Vaughn did say that despite talks being over “It’d be hard to say no,” if he was offered the chance to make a Superman film.

I personally hope WB does actually remove their heads from where the sun don’t shine and stop making movies from their B list and really give us a damned good Superman film. Cavill’s version of Kal-El/Kent can absolutely be redeemed in my eyes as the ultimate superhero.

Upcoming DC movies include Joker on October 10th, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020, The Batman on June 25, 2021, The Suicide Squad on August 6, 2021, and Aquaman 2 on December 16, 2022. Now all but one of those do have my interest, but I do feel like there’s a Superman-sized gap in that lineup and that makes me sad.

Are you disappointed that Vaughn is no longer attached to this movie, are you worried there just won’t be another Superman film, and what do you think of Vaughn’s initial pitch for a trilogy? Fight for truth, justice and the LRM way in the usual spot below.
