If you’re a fan of remakes, rehashes, and reboots, then chances are you’re a huge an of Hollywood in general. Almost since it first emerged as an art form it was used to retell familiar stories, and even today, that proud tradition hasn’t changed. Last month, in fact, we learned that there would be a remake of the violent western classic The Wild Bunch. What’s more, it’d be directed by Mel Gibson.
But…this is a bad idea, right? Westerns aren’t exactly a hot commodity in Hollywood, and Mel Gibson, while still respected for his talent, isn’t exactly the best box office pull. Plus, isn’t it an awful idea to try and rekindle a classic film? Speaking with Deadline, Gibson revealed that he thought so at first as well:
“I thought it was a bad idea at first. Why make The Wild Bunch again? Who would do that? I thought about it and I thought about it some more, and then I thought of a way [into the story]. A way to tell the story. So I’ve been sitting in a room with a writer and it’s been a blast. So it started as a bad idea, but it’s heading toward something that could be special. It’s about last chances and guys with lives of accrued violence. … Those guys [in the original film]? They laugh a lot, but it isn’t funny.”

It sounds intriguing, and I’m happy to hear Gibson isn’t just trying to recapture what made the original so special. But what is that new “way into the story”? What was his overall approach that differentiated it from the original? I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.
