After his directorial debut on Marvel Special Werewolf by Night, the composer now has his first movie. Deadline reports that Michael Giacchino’s first movie as a director is a remake of classic sci-fi movie Them for Warner Bros. The original movie is from the WB stable and was released back in 1954. Them was a nuclear age movie about a group of oversized irradiated ants that go on a rampage. The Humans have to find these ants before they set up a new home and destroy them before they devour the populace.
This might not seem like the obvious choice for a remake. Or, at least not a Syfy remake called Ant Vs Man or some other such nonsense. However this remake is something that Giacchino has been mulling over for a long time and he has an idea how to make it relevant to the world we live in now.
“There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head,” Giacchino tells Deadline. “For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age.”
“What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie,” teases Giacchino about what his early vision is for the pic.
Giacchino also revealed he will score the movie and that his brother, fellow filmmaker Anthony will be involved in the production.

For now there is no timeline attached to the Them remake from Giacchino. Therefore we will just need to wait and see once things get up and running. I do have a soft spot for some of those old 1950’s sci-fi movies. When I was a kid they used to show a lot of old black and white movies from that era on network TV. Bearing in mind that back in the early 80’s there was only 4 channels to choose from in the U.K. and no premium paid options.
In other words, it was better as a kid to watch than a lot of content on there. Plus, who doesn’t like to see Humans being eaten by giant bugs and having to fight back? The issue will always be whether this is Arachnophobia or Shark Tornado. Just two example at either end of the quality scale for me. However I don’t imagine Giacchino is looking to smash out a quick low budget movie about ant’s with 5 heads. Though you never know?
Not sure if I would rush to theatres to see this Them remake from Giacchino. However I will give it a shot at some point for sure.
