As with many other iconic roles, it would be difficult to imagine anyone else as Mr. Blonde from Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Most of us film nerds are well aware that the character was brilliantly played by actor Michael Madsen, but as it turns out, Madsen almost passed on the role.
This seems like an odd reason to turn down a role. I really can’t tell if Madsen is being tongue-in-cheek here or genuine. Madsen said the following in the new documentary QT8: The First Eight. You can check it out below and decide for yourselves.
“I don’t know why (Tarantino) had me stuck in his head to play Mr. Blonde. I didn’t want to play Mr Blonde. I didn’t want to get shot by Tim Roth. I didn’t want to be killed by Tim Roth. I was like, ‘Hey man, who is Tim Roth?’ I would let Harvey Keitel kill me, but I’m not getting killed by Tim Roth.”

We’re glad you took the role Mr. Madsen, there’s no one else we’d rather be stuck in the middle with than you sir.
Both Madsen and Roth have gone on to work with Tarantino again. film family, with Roth going on to play Pumpkin in Pulp Fiction and the bellhop Ted (though Tarantino only directed one segment of that film). Madsen playing Budd in the Kill Bill films as well as appearing in Hateful 8 and most recently, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
