Michael Schur And Shae Serrano Discuss Primo | Exclusive

The creator of Primo, Shae Serrano gives us a taste of what it’s like to grow up with five uncles that always meant well, but sometimes with not so great feedback. With Michael Schur on board with the Mexican sitcom as executive producer.

The Synopsis

The coming-of-age, single-camera comedy, inspired by Serrano’s life growing up in San Antonio, TX, follows Rafa Gonzales (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, “Departing Seniors”), a wide-eyed 16-year-old being raised by his clever mother, Drea (Christina Vidal, “See No Devil”), and his five overbearing uncles (Rollie, Mike, Ryan, Jay, and Mondo) as they live their lives on the southside of San Antonio. Rafa is at an inflection point, as three big life moments coincide: he and his friends are nearing the end of high school; he’s pretty sure he just met the girl of his dreams; and he just found out he has a real chance to become the first person in his family to go to college. Over the course of the series, the group—Rafa, his mom, uncles, friends, and crush—will all affect each other and help one another grow in ways they weren’t expecting, whether they like it or not.

Michael Schur is a writer and producer known for his creativity for television sitcoms like The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Before some of these hits he was a writer for NBC’s Saturday Night Life for six years. He left with his first Primetime Emmy Award as a part of the SNL writing team and his second Emmy win was for The Office. HBO Max Hacks and Peacock’s Rutherford Falls are two of his most recent projects.

Before the Texan became a book author and journalist, Shae Serrano was first a middle school science teacher. Shae picked up writing as a way to make additional income while he was starting a family. He wrote for the Houston Press and some of his work made its way to LA Weekly giving him national crededition. Other publications that have shown his work are GQ, ESPN, Rolling Stone and MTV. Among those that appreciated his writing style was Grantland and joined their team. Serranos book titles The Rap Year Book, Basketball (and Other Things) and Movie (and Other Things) have made The New York Times #1 bestseller list.
