With over 17 percent of Americans over the age of 65, the overall population is currently getting older. With these aging adults, their children sees the need to care for them due to health issues, dementia, and even loneliness.
Director Michelle Boyaner took the opportunity to document her care of her own mother in It’s Not A Burden. In this touching film, Boyaner took a journey herself in bonding with her aging mother and explores the challenges with it. Also, the film offers countless interviews of many children caring and re-discovery their aging parents in myriad ways.

It’s Not A Burden is an intimate, humorous and heartfelt journey into the stories of adult children navigating the challenges and joys of caring for their aging parents. Feature filmmaker Michelle Boyaner’s complex and tender journey caring for her own parents, the film also provides a glimpse into the lives of several other families each with their own diverse backgrounds, unique challenges, and personalities. The heartwarming film explores not only the frustrations and fears, but also the transformative bonds that happen when familial roles are reversed, friends support friends, and communities come together, exemplifying our capacity to love.

Michell Boyaner is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker with films, including Packed In A Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson, A Finished Life: The Goodbye and No Regrets Tour, Hi, You’ve Reached Dave’s Apartment, and Tina Paulina: Living on Hope Street. She also directed the narrative short The Bedwetter. In addition, she wrote a popular blog called Live at Lakeridge and a book of personal essays chronicling her beloved grandmother’s battle against Alzheimer’s.
