Growing up Mexican/Salvadorean meant that I got the best of two amazing cultures. One specific thing I’ve always cherished is the classic Mexican game, Loteria. It’s a simple game that is very similar to bingo. But instead of matching up numbers on your card, you match up a variety of different images. When you have successfully filled all sixteen squares, you win! Well, at least that is how we play it at our house. Some others may just do a row or pattern.

What makes this game special is that it seemed to always bring together the young, old, and everyone in-between. The concept is so simple that everyone can play. Also if you are playing with the right people, you may have a skilled caller that has little rhymes to go with every card. Or maybe they call the cards fast and you need to keep up. But be careful because some people are very particular about which card they want!

Following that tradition, Mike Alfaro had the idea to update the classic Mexican board game. Our generation of millennials definitely has grown up in a very interesting time. With that in mind, he created Millennial Loteria. This is a hilarious and fun parody of the classic game that may even help us reflect on some of our common practices. It includes cards like El Hipster, La Student Debt, El Gender Reveal, and so many more. This has been very successful and is now even available at Target locations.

With success comes greater opportunities. With the release this weekend of Warner Bros. The Suicide Squad, Alfaro partnered up with Warner Bros. to make a very limited edition of a custom Loteria set featuring various characters and items from The Suicide Squad film. Through this piece, you have been able to see various cards that were featured in the set. Including names like Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, and King Shark. Also, there is a look at one of the boards.

With the release of the film and this Loteria set, LRM Online’s Emmanuel Gomez talked with creator Mike Alfaro about his custom The Suicide Squad set. During our conversation, we learned about how the characters and items were chosen for the set.
